I was watching Battle of the Giants yesterday. Just to remind you they are ordered to wear their medals at the church parade. Mr Yeatman comes in to the office to collect the Vicar's WW1 medals. I noticed Mr Yeatman was wearing a single medal with a green ribbon. Any ideas what it was for?

Sure. It isn't a war medal. It is a boy scout medal for services to them. You will notice also that when wearing it, he is dressed in his Boy scout leader clothes

I wondered if it is a Royal Navy or Merchant Navy medal. Did the Navy get Pip, Squeak and Wilfred or was it only the Army? He did know how to fire the gun in Big Guns

Yes, the Royal navy got the Pip, Squeak and Wilfred medal the same as the army.

Cheers Kev. I searched Google for a while and the closest I got was a good conduct medal for the RN

My grandfather on my dad's side was in the Navy for 28 years and had the Pip,Squeak and Wilfred medals. Royal marines got them as well.

I think the vergers medal might be the "William T Hornaday award" I've found details of it and a photo by googling it, it's awarded to scouts and sea scouts. Perhaps someone could post a photo of it, I'm not sure how to.

Just had a close up look and I think it's a different medal, I think the vergers has a stripe on it.

It's the Messina Earthquake medal 1908. From italy to RN and merchant ships crews who assisted. The assumption would be that he was Royal Navy or MM at some point prior to becoming sea scout leader. 3000 or so issued.

Incidentally the Hornaday award is only for usa scouts... Fraser's medals a Artic or Antartic Polar expedition medal.

Welcome to the forum, scoutmick! Thanks for that info. Solved after all these years. Really interesting to learn that the Verger was an old sailor. Hence the reason he knew about the safety catch on the 13 Pounder QF gun!

It's always impressive when a new member arrives and posts something that solves a long standing mystery. Well done and welcome, scoutmick!

Interesting stuff. Hadn't given the Verger's medal much thought until the topic was mentioned on the forum. The Captain certainly noticed: I'm sure he experienced a few tremors and a fair amount of aftershock once the Verger departed.
