I'm in search of another series to watch and as I've had no luck with finding 'You Rang M'Lord', I am now wondering about 'Grace & Favour'. I've haven't seen any of the episodes and to be honest, wasn't even aware of its existence until I joined this forum. Has anyone watched it? I know it comes down to individual taste in the end, but it'd be great to hear what people think of the series before I invest in a dvd It sounds really good from what I've manged to find online.

Have you ever seen any of Are You Being Served? If you liked that, you'll like this sequel starring several of the original cast. In fact, I enjoyed Grace and Favour even more than the original AYBS. You don't have to invest in a DVD sight unseen. Just go to youtube and do a search for Grace and Favour. I tried that just now, and enough search results pop up to give you a pretty clear idea what you'd be buying on a G&F DVD.

Hi straycat, (and all)
Thanks so much for that. Good to hear you enjoyed the series. I did enjoy 'Are You Being Served?' as a child, so I'll probably like Grace and Favour. I like the idea of the inn. What a good idea to give it a try on youtube first - thanks for that. I'm a bit of a technophobe so didn't think of it.

I got the two series DVD's about 3 years ago from Amazon in the US where it is known as Are you Being Served Again, cost around £18, I don't know if it's been released in the UK or Oz, in fact I got the last 4 seasons of Are you being Served from the states long before they were released in the UK, even with postage they were a lot cheaper as well.

Thanks very much for that John. Did you enjoy it? I still haven't got to see it yet.

Hmm, I think I may have seen a couple of episodes of Grace and Favour when it was first shown on TV. I don't think all the original cast members were in it, were they? Trevor Bannister didn't appear in it but he wasn't in the last couple of series of Are You Being Served? either.

The story was that Mr Grace had died & the pension fund was worth nothing, they just had a large guest house that they could run to make some money, most of the cast were there apart from Trevor Bannister amd Mike Berry. Mr Moleterd & his daughter ran the farm within the grounds, it was quite funny but after 2 series there wasn't much left to keep it fresh so they called it a day.

I'd actually never seen or heard of this until I stumbled across it recently on Youtube. I thought it was reasonably amusing although the whole premise of the thing was pretty ridiculous. Most notable however is that Mrs Slocombe's pussy finally makes an appearance

I believe it was shown around 5.00pm on Sundays, there were just the two series in 1992 & 1993, David Croft did say the title should have been as it was in the USA ' Are You Being Served, Again' , so the public knew what to expect.

The premise of almost every episode of Are You being Served was ridiculous, but they were still funny and great fun.
They screened Grace and Favour here in a primetime slot, I think Saturday night from memory.

I agree Dave, after the first 2 or 3 series of AYBS, I think they just played it for laughs, I also notice that Mollie & Trevor share top billing til around series 6 then John Inman takes over and many of the shows are just pure pantomime after that, unfortunately for John Inman he got type cast as Mr Humphries and despite the two shows he did for ITV, he just couldn't shake of the character. I don't think David Croft got so involved either, he usually is credited with producer and not director, I would think that unlike most of the other programmes he co-wrote he had no experience of the subject.

The premise of almost every episode of Are You being Served was ridiculous, but they were still funny and great fun. I was referring to the overall premise of Grace & Favour. The overall premise of AYBS - a bunch of people working in a department store - was realistic (even if what they got up to wasn't ). The overall premise of Grace & Favour - that those people whould be left a manor house in lieu of a pension fund and decide to run it as a guest house - was not realistic (IMO). I think that might have put a few people off it actually, it could have seemed they were trying to milk the success of AYBS. As I said above though, when I watched a few episodes I found it quite funny. The best thing about AYBS and Grace & Favour was the wonderful double entendres! You couldn't beat these shows for that .

AYBS was very successful in America so I guess that was one reason why they decided to bring a version of it back, the main difference being that much of Grace & Favour was shot on location while AYBS was entirely studio based.
