Found this on CNN - a fantastic story! During the early years of the war, British military experimented with massive blocks of ice, trying to convert them into floating landing strips for aicraft. This would be a way to counter the German U-boats in the North Atlantic. One ”ice-boat” was built as a prototype and tested in a lake in Canada. edition.cnn.com/style/article/project-habbakuk-ice-aircraft-carrier/index.htmlSounds like something Cpl Jones would come up with! But the story is quite true.

Maybe it was not such a crazy idea after all then. It is remarkable how stories like these keep turning up about WW2, you would think that all had been said and done by now!
