I discovered these picture of Arthur and thought they'd make rather cool avatars! They were taken during Arthur's time as Mr Swindley in Coronation Street. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. To add an avatar to your profile: Save the picture and then upload it to a photo hosting site like Photobucket. Go to modify profile, copy and paste the direct link in Avatar URL, change Avatar Width to 100 and Avatar Length to 100 and click on Modify Profile at the foot of the page.

Katie - you never cease to amaze me with your discoveries!
It's quite nice to see a cheeky side to Arthur too!

There is a style in Capt Mainwaring 's commands. I relish the way he gives the command for Attention when Wilson tells Jonesy....'do you think you could possible get your legs together?' Mainwaring tells him ;' youre supposed to be sargeant , not the headmistress of a girls school !' Then Mainwaring gives the perfect command for ATTENTION ! Dont you just love the way he gives commands...?

I DO June. My husband's style is a bit 'Wilson' with a rare touch of Mainwaring if someone has really cheesed him off, so he was somewhat surprised when he asked his American 2iC (It was a multi-national Battalion) to have a 'quiet word' with a young Subaltern who had stepped out of line, and the 2iC reported back proudly; 'Sir, I flamed his ass!'

Sometimes I watch the shows and have to remind myself that most of these old chaps died when I was a mere lad and I realise that the humour still holds firm even decades later.
I'm a big fan of Laurel and Hardy and I still constantly remind myself that those guys were born before my grandparents, and were dead before even before I uttered my first squawk.
Isn't it wonderful that we have ability these days to capture the laughter and relive it time and again?

Absolutely!
Sometimes I find myself feeling sad when I realise that all the people in a DA scene are no longer with us - some legacy they left though, and Heaven's going to be a laugh!

I look at it this way, when I discovered Dad's Army at age 14, the main cast members still alive were Clive Dunn, Ian lavender, Bill Pertwee, Frank Williams, Pam Cundell and Colin Bean. Now all are still with us except dear old Colin. Not a bad record in 25 years.

I often think its quite sad that the likes of Arthur, John Le Mes, John Laurie, Arnold Ridley and Jimmy Beck never lived to see how legendary the show has become, though if Arnold and John Laurie had lived both would be well over 110 by now and no doubt still trying to entertain us!
