Was watching The Unforgettable Hattie Jacques on tv earlier, and it showed a clip of Hattie's This Is Your Life show from 1963.
John's small tribute to Hattie was so reminiscent of Wilson, even though Dad's was still 5 years off in the future, just makes you wonder if it was another acting performance from John, given the state of their marriage at that time.

But don't forget that John and Hattie still lived together and were still great friends then and right through till her death. They holidayed together and had Christmases together. It would be Hattie and her new man, John and Joan, Joan's ex-husband Mark, etc all together. Strange but rather nice.

Yes, he'd had massive liver failure while in Australia. He had not long been back and out of hospital when the last series of Dad's Army was made, but if you look at stuff he made later, even as early as 1978, he was back to his usual self in looks and was much healthier as he'd given up alcohol. By 1983 however he was sick of not being able to pop down the pub for a pint as he'd always used to do, so he decided to take up drinking again, and in the end the liver failed again and killed him (or conked him out!). But he died happy rather than miserable.
