I believe My Old Man was based on a one off that Ronnie Corbett did in the series Seven Of One, Open All Hours & Porridge were part of that series.. That's quite correct. Almost. Ronnie Barker. My Old Man was indeed based on the BBC2 Seven of One pilot of the same name, but produced by Yorkshire Television with an entirely new cast (headed up, of course, by Clive).

The Barker version was funny and watchable. The Dunn version was poorly written and just dreadful. I can see why the BBC never took up the series and let ITV grab it.

Well in all fairness My Old Man wasn't going to come anywhere close to Porridge or Open All Hours, both masterclasses in sitcom and still memorable shows.

I'm almost through the dads army series (episode 2 season 10) and I can't believe I've spent all my life without this show. I relate to jones the most, and bless Clive dunn''s soul he passed in 2012. Whish I got to tell him how much I appreciated him. And all the joy he has given me. Also to john beck, who died too soon, and it still hurts.

James Beck, rather than John.
Yes I know what you mean. I discovered Dad's Army in 1985 as a 14 year old and felt gutted when I learned that Arthur Lowe, John Le Mesurier, John Laurie, Arnold Ridley, James Beck and Teddy Sinclair was dead by then. I was lucky though to make contact with and become friends with the remaining cast and the writers. Now there are so few left.

Yes it must have been fantastic to be have been able to communicate with the people behind it all. And also great for us here at the forum as there is so much extra knowledge that is so generously shared😊. I learn new things every time I check in!

So it seems that Clive Dunn was appearing live on stage as L/Cpl Jones as early as 1971. I knew he had a touring cabaret but I did not realise he did it as Jones!! Now I wonder when it began, since his 1970 LP album was focused on Jones too. This is from the Liverpool Echo, 3 March 1971

Coventry Evening Telegraph - Wednesday 23 March 1977
DAD'S ARMY STAR"S WIFE BADLY HURT PRISCILLA MORGAN, actress wife of Dad's Army TV star Cive Dunn, was badly hurt in a road accident today. Mr Dunn was also injured, but left hospital after treatment for chest injuries. He later returned to his wife's bedside. The couple were passengers in a Mini driven by Donald Sinden's son, Jeremy. Mr Jeremy Sinden's girlfriend Sally Osbourne was also badly hurt. Police say that each has a fractured pelvis.

And the good news about that report is that Priscilla pulled through and ended up outliving Clive. I'd not heard about this, or of Clive's chest injuries. Very lucky the accident wasn't more serious for all concerned.

Interesting articles! I wonder if Clive needed any agreement with Jimmy and David to appear as Jonesy? I suspect they were a little more laid back about such things as you rarely see anything on the records saying "By arrangement with..." I suspect he appeared as Jonesy in a sequence during To see Such Fun, he certainly appears in costume in the programme as he does as his Grandad character...

I've often wondered about things like that. Over the years actors have appeared "elsewhere" playing their well known characters, even in commercials and adverts. In Australia, Warren Mitchell used to do TV adverts as Alf Garnett, advertising various things. I assume they have to get permission from the creators of the characters, in that case, Johnny Speight, and maybe the BBC? I wouldn't have thought they'd have been too much in favour of it, the evils of commercialism, etc, etc.

I don't think TV companies were as obsessed with brands or image rights in those days, though I'm sure that when actors appeared in character outside the TV series concerned they'd have OKed things with their bosses, out of courtesy.
These days the BBC even have a 'Brand Protection' department which I suspect it's not a good idea to fall foul of...

I do know that Jimmy Perry told me he was livid that Arthur and John did an adverts for Cadbury's as the company had not asked permission. However when you look at the ad they are not actually playing Mainwaring and Wilson, just two officers. But I think it was the image being so reminiscent of Mainwaring and Wilson that upset Jimmy. Perhaps he was wanting some chocolate in return.

And yet with so much utter tat out there on the market using Dad's Army branding to sell itself it makes you wonder if they have passed scrutiny of this office. I'll bet most of it is unknown to the BBC and the estates of Perry and Croft.

Couldn't agree with you more, but I do think the mugs, socks, and other such stuff is licensed. Pity it's so awful!

Its saturation for a merchandise market though. I mean look at Friends, theres more merchandise based on that series now than there was 20 years ago when it was on the screens (they've even just announced a Lego set - imagine if Dad's Army suddenly got one of those?).
I spent a good few years collecting original books, games etc... I didn't get everything but I'm happy with my lot! I've had a few of the newer items bought me as presents but some of them have taken a turn for the worse of late and I certainly don't rush out and buy things now because they've got Dad's Army written on them. I didn't even bother with the Radio Times special last year because it looked like a lot of repeating of material that I already had!

Is it worth splitting off the discussion about merchandise? I think there's a lot to be said but it's not really a Clive Dunn topic.

Problem is it is not too easy to split off. How about we stop talking about it here now, and if there's anything more to be said, whoever wants to say it can start a new thread on merchandise.
