There seems to be an impression that the cast were really elderly, I’m I right Alan? I mean older than the actually were?
Yes, definitely. The term Dad's Army was often used in Britain as a derogatory term for sports teams and politicians who were considered old to be doing what they were doing - and I think people were blind to the fact that of the 7 main cast members, only two of them (John Laurie and Arnold Ridley) were above retirement age when the series finished in 1977.
Arthur Lowe was 62, John Le Mesurier was 65, Clive Dunn was 57 (though admittedly his character was meant to be older than Frazer and Godfrey), James Beck would have been 48 had he lived, John Laurie was 80, Arnold Ridley was 81 and Ian Lavender was 31.
