One thing that came as a surprise was to hear Mavis calling Hodges by the nickname "Wally" in the pub bar. I think you may be mistaken there Alan. Mavis does not call him anything as far as I have heard. But Frazer does call him Willie when they are talking about settling the bet at the bar. The character's name was indeed William Hodges, aka Willie.

And for that matter John Laurie seems to have added the name Willie as it is not in he script.

And also maybe Frazer's pronunciation of Willie sounds unsurprisingly a bit like Wally with his Scottish accent. I'll check it through again tomorrow.

Yep it is his accent I think that adds a more rounded sound and it sounds similar to Wally. But I am certain he calls him Willie.

Actually, I've just checked it and you're absolutely right. And yes, with his accent it sounds like "Wullie", hence my mishearing. Quite why later I thought it was Mavis who'd said it, goodness knows...

Back rowers. Like Sponge, Hancock, Hastings, Cecil, etc.

This episode is also the starting point of a continuity error (sort of).
The mix up with Jones about Mrs. Mainwaring's condition comes about when Mainwaring is trying to obtain some oxtail "under the counter" for his wife.
In A Soldier's Farewell in series 5, when he buys the cheese from Walker, Mainwaring mentions to Wilson that Elizabeth is a vegetarian.
It's possible that she could have become a vegetarian between Absent Friends and A Soldier's Farewell, but I doubt any thought would had been given to that, so I reckon it's a continuity error.

I think there were a number of people in Britain who became vegetarians because of the lack of meat and the abundance of fresh veges in their victory gardens.
However I also know vegetarians who "get like that from time to time" and will have an occasional bacon sandwich or a meat pie, too!

2.5 years a vegetarian and I never plan to go back. No desire to eat meat, either.
There. A completely selfish diversion to this thread...

Not even for the occasional ox tail, from time to time?
