Series 7 Episode 3: Gorilla Warfare
Broadcast on 29.11.74
The platoon are off on a weekend exercise which explains why Pike has his scarf, Wilson a suitcase and pyjamas, and Godfrey an eiderdown. They are supposed to be commandos who've been dropped behind enemy lines; they have to rendezvous with a secret agent - who's Mainwaring, of course - and take him to a secret place. GHQ will try stopping then by using counter agents.
The Verger and Hodges are annoyed when they hear Mainwaring's men laughing about Eastgate's effort, so they set out to get the platoon spotted. Mainwaring suspects everyone of being a counter agent, including a woman with a pram, two nuns with a broken-down car and a very suspicious man who races out from the woods saying he runs an experimental laboratory for the war office and a gorilla has escaped.
Mainwaring and his men survive the day and spend the night in a farmer's barn, but there's someone else in the barn: Lieutenant Wood, disguised as a gorilla. The gorilla reports back to GHQ that Mainwaing is the important secret agent. With only half an hour to deliver Mainwaring to GHQ, time is against them, but after Mainwaring commandeers Hodges' motorbike and sidecar and ends up riding pillion with a gorilla, with Jones in the sidecar, they reach their destination in the nick of time. On their arrival, the important secret agent is looking the worse for the wear thanks to a misplaced needle!
Also appearing: Bill Pertwee (Chief ARP Warden), Talfryn Thomas (Pte Cheeseman), Edward Sinclair (Verger), Robert Raglan (Colonel), Robin Parkinson (Lieutenant Wood), Erik Chitty (Mr Clerk), Rachel Thomas (The Mother Superior), Michael Sharvell-Martin (Lieutenant), Verne Morgan (Farmer), Joy Allen (Lady with the Pram).
