Series 9 Episode 1: Wake Up Walmington
Broadcast on 2/10/77
While Mainwaring and Wilson are in the church hall chatting, a disgruntled Hodges comes in annoyed about finding Mr Bluett using a stirrup pump to stray his greenfly. When Mr Bluett follows him in and demands the pump back before telling Hodges how much he hates him, the warden gets upset and proclaims no one is taking the war seriously.
Morale is low in the platoon, and Frazer claims the Home Guard are being called the geriatric fusiliers around town. To shake the town out of its complacency, they decide to roam the countryside dressed up as fifth columnists and Mainwaring invites Hodges to join his team in a rare show of respect between the old rivals.
After clearing the scheme with GHQ, 'Operation Wake Up' is launched. The men rendezvous at the old flour mill just outside town. At first light, they march but no one seems to take any notice, even though they try looking suspicious and furtive. Back at the church hall on Sunday morning, Captain Square turns up wanting Mainwaring, just as the police at Dymchurch call saying a fifth columnist has been spotted. Square sets off in pursuits of Jones' van with his men and the Verger.
At the old flour mill, just as they are about to march on the gasworks, Square and his men storm the building and can't believe it when the so-called fifth columnists are none other than Mainwaring and his men.
Also appearing: Bill Pertwee (Chief ARP Warden), Frank Williams (Vicar), Edward Sinclair (Verger), Geoffrey Lumsden (Captain Square), Harold Bennett (Mr Bluett), Robert Raglan (Colonel), Charles Hall (Perkins), Jeffery Holland (Soldier).
