Broadcast between July 31 and September 11 1968. Here we are, the year is 1968, and around a table are a group of middle and old men, discussing that years Im Backing Britain Campaign, the spokesman explains how he has always backed Britain a habit he got into in 1940, the year of Britain's darkest hour.
Transported back almost 30 years, we meet for the first time the manager of Swallow bank with delusions of grandeur George Mainwaring, his suave and sophisticate chief clerk Arthur Wilson and the silly boy junior clerk Frank Pike.
Along the way we encounter the grizzled veteran of many campaigns now the local butcher Jack Jones & the dour scots man James Frazer the keeper of a philatelist shop (spelled S.H.O.P), the spiv who for a price can get you things in short supply Joe Walker, and last but not least the retired, gentlemanly but with a weak bladder Charles Godfrey.
Also popping up are the bad tempered green grocer and ARP warden Hodges, the overbearing mother of Pike and secret lover of Wilson Mrs Mavis Pike & the sneaky church hall caretaker Mr. Yeatman.
Now the scene is set for 9 years and counting & 80 episodes of television history.

I have voted for Command Decision because we see for the first time that even though Mainwaring is rather over zealous with his captaincy, we see him prepared to relinquish command of the platoon to secure rifles for the benefit of both the platoon and the defence of Walmington on Sea
