Im trying to think of actors and actresses who had 1 off appearances in any episode that became really famous later on in their careers. With out checking any of the episodes i have came up with a few, but can anyone add others. Not looking for actor's and actresses who went on to star in any other Croft or Perry shows.
Geoffrey Hughes (Brain v Brawn) went on to star in Coronation St, Heart beat, The Royle Family & Keeping Up Appearances.
Nigel Hawthorne (Armoured Might Of Lance Corporal Jones) went on to star in Yes Minister/Yes Prime Minister, The Madness Of King George & Demolition Man
Barbara Windsor(Shooting Pains) who of course went on to the Carry On films and more famously Eastenders
Bill Treacher (Menace From The Deep) Also went on to star in EastEnders.

Wasn't Kenneth MacDonald in one episode, who went on to play Mike the barman in 'Only Fools and Horses', and Gunner Clark in 'It Ain't Half Hot Mum'?

There are quite a few Carmen Silvera who played Mrs Gray went on to play Madame Edith in 'Allo 'Allo & Rose Hill who played her mother was Mrs Cole in Uninvited Guests and several family members , Ian Lavenders first wife, Jimmy Perry wife and her sister the actress Diane Holland, Michael Knowles wife & I believe several of the main casts family appeared in the final episode as well.

Yeah but they didn't become household names, apart from Carmen Silvera, that's the point i'm trying to make Jonboy. People who didn't appear in other Croft or Perry shows but became famous in other shows or films.

John Bardon appeared in Ring Dem Bells and became a well known face later in Eastenders.
As an aside, some of the people who made one off appearances were already stars from the wartime era who were brought back from near retirement to make a one off appearance, such as Leon Cortez who played the milkman in Museum Piece - who had been a music star in the wartime period with his own orchestra, E.V.H. Emmett who was a well known wartime newsreel narrator brought back for Series One, and Nan Kenway the wartime radio star who played Mrs Prentice in the radio version of All Is Safely Gathered In. And not forgetting both Bud Flanagan and Chesney Allen too, Bud singing the theme song and Chesney appearing as himself in the opening night of the Dad's Army stage show.

Was Barbara Windsor not already famous by 1968? I had always assumed she was cast as Laura La Plaz because of her famous figure. She had already done a lot of films including Carry Ons and TV by then, surely? Or do you have to be in Eastenders before you're considered 'famous' now.

Queenie Watts, who went on to star with Arhur Mullard in Yus My Dear and Philip Madoc who played a Welsh detective in the series A Mind to Kill are about the only others I can think of who didn't appear in any other roles in Croft & Perry shows.

The reason i mentioned Barbara Windsor was because, yes she had been in Carry On films before hand, but it was,t until Carry On Camping in 1969, when her bikini top was whipped off by a fishing rod that she became something of a household name.
I read somewhere Jonboy that Queenie was also pub landlady as well as an actress and used to entertain the punters by singing round the piano

Thanks Stephen, I know little about Windsor and the Carry on films which are not my cup of tea, so I wasn't really sure.

Not to mention the brilliant Jim Dale...A very talented man. i have a box set and i just love such classic british comedies.

I liked the 50s and 60s Carry On films but by the 70s they had gone right off. Bill Pertwee was in 3 Carry Ons, Loving, Girs and At Your Convenience but his scenes were cut from the the latter film.
Arnold Ridley was also in Carry On Girls.
Ian Lavender was in Carry On Behind.
Whether any more of the Dad's Army team were involved in any Carry On's im not sure.

I have to admit that I never really liked the Carry On films much either, but then again, the last one I watched was probably as a child. I will have to watch a couple to see what I think.

John Leeson appears in Sons Of The Sea as a soldier on guard, and would later become the voice of K9 in Doctor Who, maybe not a household name but certainly well known amongst Doctor Who fans...

I think the ones you mentioned at the start are all I can see having looked through Bill Pertwee's book.

Jeffery Holland appeared in at least one episode, not sure if he was famous by then or not though.

No Kev Jeffery did not become famous until he was in Hi De Hi a few years after his appearance in Dad's Army.

Don Estelle fits this category. He went on to have a chart-topping song.

Jack Woolgar was in The Two and a Half Feathers. I think he was later on tv every Saturday evening in The Duchess of Duke Street.
Does Wendy Richard qualify? She was perhaps in too many episodes for this.
Fulton McKay quickly became famous in Porridge pretty much playing the character he played as the instructor (not when a doctor)
