Originally broadcast between 11/06/69 - 11/12/69 The first long series, in which we also meet the last of our happy band, the Oxford educated Rev Timothy Farthing. We see our boy's and girl's partying down, outwitting foreign captains, and we find out about the unexpected courage shown by one member of the platoon. So which episode and why is your favourite?.

Has to be Branded for me, seeing the way poor old Godfrey is ostracised because of his beliefs, only to be find out what a hero he really was. Quite a moving episode.

Without doubt, it had to be Sons of the Sea. The look on Walker's face when he thinks he is about to be chastised by Mainwaring but is told he is 'the backbone of England' is priceless. Fantastic episode and is my second favourite after Never Too Old.

Yes, a difficult choice, but I decided to go for The Day the Balloon Went Up, which is such a classic, through and through.

I chose Sons of the Sea because it is my absolute favourite episode of all. I love the way that when the men are stuck in the boat, the traits of each character are especially obvious, yet it doesn't seem overdone or one-dimensional at all - Godfrey's cautiousness (the only one wearing a life jacket) Wilson's laid-back nature (reading the newspaper) etc etc. Just fantastic.
I think overall, Series 3 might be my favourite series as it seems almost every episode is a classic.

'No Spring For Frazer' just about edges out 'Sons of the Sea' for me. Some classic quotes!
"What's the position regarding Lewis gun spares? What all? Oh I see..."
"Bad news, Captain. They've screwed him dooon!"
;D

i like all the episodes but i like The Armoured Might of Lance Corporal Jones, some classic lines in it.
Jones - "Its also a troop transport, you sit on the floor!"
Jones - "Where ever i look theres a great, sagging bag!" Walker - "Cant you take your mind off woman for a moment, mate?"
Jones and Walker - "Heil Hitler rah rah rah, oh what a funny little man you are! With your little moustache and hair all blah, Heil Hitler, rah, rah, rah!"
Mainwaring - "The result? Instant decapitation, doesnt know whats happened" Walker - "Not until he nods his head!"
Jones to Wilson *after a lecture on gas masks* - "I never heard a word he said!"
The bits where there trying to get Mr Bluett into the "ambulence" and the gas escaping from the punctured fuel line and pointing there rifles out of holes in the van are hilarious! ;D

This series is brilliant. All the episodes are classics. However i voted for Branded as we see Godfrey prove everyone wrong when he rescues Mainwaring from the smoke filled hut, also when they discover he won the Military Medal. I love the part where Frazer hands Godfrey the tiny bottle of Whiskey.

Series 3 is probably the best series I think (just) but it does I suppose have the advantage of having fourteen episodes as opposed to some of the other series that have only six. Although of course Series 4 & 5 do have thirteen a piece which means that half of the entire output of the whole series (40 episodes) come from Series 3, 4 and 5 so it isn't a great surprise that a lot of people's favourites come from these three series. If there was a time where the show was ever considered to be at its peak it would have been around these middle series somewhere I'd imagine.
Anyway as far as Series 3 goes there really isn't an episode among them that I could even remotely call average. If I had to pick a favourite I would say "Battle School" probably in a photo finish from "Sons of the Sea" and "Menace From the Deep".
